DEATH BY SHIP STRIKE

.

Hundreds of whales and dolphins are killed by ship strikes every year. The main problem is that ships travel through cetacean habitats, and there is no technology on board to warn against an empending cetacean collision. Most of the fatal collisions are caused by large and heavy cargo ships and cruise ships. Ship strike cetacean deaths must be eliminated, and this can only be done by keeping these ships out of cetacean habitats and armed with the technology geared toward collision avoidance. This cetacean murder by ship strike must end now.

On July 25, 2009 the passenger ship Sapphire Princess struck and killed a fin whale. The tragedy wasn't discovered until the ship was close to port. The ship was returning to Vancouver from Alaska. Thousands of whales and dolphins are killed by ship strike every year. Ship strike deaths happen because large and heavy ships travel through whale habitats and have no mechanism in place to warn against whale collisions. photo: Ming Pao Daily

Every year thousands of whales and dolphins are struck and killed by ships. But in this rare incident there is a reversal of fortune. This whale struck and destroyed a ship, instead of the other way around. On July 21, 2010 a 33-foot southern right whale breached the waters off Cape Town, South Africa and landed on a private yacht. The yacht was heavily damaged but the people on board, Ralph Motes and Paloma Werner, were unhurt. The whale swam away after the incident, although it was slightly injured. It is not yet known why this southern right whale breached and collided with this yacht, but it does show the damage that a whale that size can do. Fortunately for humans, and with rare exception, whale and dolphins do not intentionally harm humans. photo: Universal News and Sports
